Childrens' Author R.L. Stine to Visit Henderson - Maria Phelan View Staff
WriteYoung fans of scary stories are probably well acquainted with the work of R.L. Stine, the internationally-known author who created the "Goosebumps" children's book series. And for fans who dream of one day writing their own scary stories or just seeing the author in person, this weekend's Celebration of Reading, presented by the city of Henderson's All People Promoting Literacy Efforts (APPLE) Partnership and Rhodes Homes, will bring a spine-tingling treat.
Bud Cranor, assistant to the mayor and City Council, said Rhodes Homes provided the resources for APPLE Presents, a program designed to bring a well-known author to the Henderson area on an annual basis to spend time with students.
As part of APPLE Presents, Stine will spend two days in the Henderson area and will meet with students of all ages at Basic High School on Friday to give a seminar on how to write scary stories. Stine also will spend time with members of Basic's journalism classes and yearbook staff. Saturday's seminar will be open to all valley residents.
Glynda Rhodes, vice president of design for Rhodes Homes and chair of the Rhodes Charitable Contribution Committee, said promoting literacy is important to her on a personal level because her own children attend public schools.
Mayor Jim Gibson brought the program to Rhodes' attention, and she agreed the program should be supported.
"We want to try to have this type of seminar annually and bring in well-known children's authors," Rhodes said. "We want to provide the opportunity to help encourage kids to get involved with reading with their families."
Rhodes said the Kids-to-Kids books program also will benefit from the event.
