Cool tips to help your little readers
Provide a Suitable Place and Time: Provide a quiet and peaceful place to read. Choose a time when your child is not tired, hungry, or really interested in doing something else. Let your child know that reading is important to you. Get comfortable, cuddle on the sofa or on the floor with a pillow; your child will feel a sense of comfort and security. Make reading time together a ritual (same time and place). Provide Suitable Material: Teach your child to select high-interest material. The reading material should not be too difficult (no more than 5 mistakes in 50 words). Try teaching them the Five Finger Test: Pinkie = pick a book you want to read. Index = Open it to a page near the middle. Middle = Read it to yourself. Ring = Put a finger up for each unknown word. Thumb = If you use all the fingers and thumb on one hand try another page. If it's still too difficult, try a new book. If it's just right, ENJOY IT!!
